Misfortunes are everyday occurrences, and we ought to hold ourselves in readiness to meet them. This little misfortune which I am about to relate, happened during vacation. The first day of this new year, if I recollect, was a delightful day, and this bright youth started out to see her, all equipped in his new uniform. Passing through a little town, he saw some very nice apples, and thought he would purchase a dozen to take along and offer her for a New-Year present. He did so, and filling his pockets, started for her house. Off herode, whistling "Mollie Darling," as the bright idea flashed through his mind as he thought what a nice present he had selected for her. (It is said when love has possession of a young man's heart, he is fond of calling his sweetheart site or her). He rode up to the gate, and alighting from his horse walked quietly towards the house. The walk was about fifty yards long, ten feet wide, and beautifully laid off. It seems that everything was fitted for a big race, and he got it. Just as he walked up to the door, the dog started for him. Such a race was never witnessed before. The apples were strewn all along the walk, and when he turned a summersault over the gate, the remaining apples fell into the mouths of some fussy pigs. As soon as they got a taste of them, they began sticking their dirty noses to his pant-legs, until he said he felt like killing the last one of them. That trip, he said, ruined his new uniform ; the prints of the pigs' noses are on his pants yet. It seems that he will never have anything hereafter but misfortunes assigned to his lot. Well, while warring with the dogs and pigs, he aroused the lady of the house, and she came forthwith to his relief. But for that he might have been slain right there. She invited him in; he was not fit to go in, but, after hesitating, he went in and spent a very pleasant time. G.
