After eating our fill of strawberries at the Academy we availed ourselves of an invitation extended to the public, and repaired to the African church to listen to a debate given by the colored club of Blacksburg. At the request of the speakers, four students were chosen to deside the question. These " men of brain " were placed in the highest seat in the synagogue, the pulpit, and presented with boquets [sic]. While thus our "most denominate judges " were enjoying these high privileges, inhalling [sic] the sweetness of flowers fair, together with the perfumes of scented air, they were most highly honored by the speakers and audience. Who could help admiring such a collection of talent and beauty? Mr. G. with blushing face and pearly teeth, Mr. S. with firery [sic] auburn hair and faultless nose, Mr. A. with his faultless figure and military dike, and Mr. B. with his beaming countenance ! How could that speaker do otherwise than call them "the beautiful?" After a full discussion of the question, "Which has the Most effect on a Community, a Drunkard or a Gambler?" Our most "abominable judges" decided that the affirmative had won the question. Although the "King's English" suffered considerable damage, the debate was truly rich, rare and spicy.
