The first grand ball of the season came off on Wednesday 13th, at the Gitt House. Your correspondent
tried to get a few items by peeping through an open window, but the calm and dignified frown of the lady in charge, the terrific brow of "Rob," together with the bewitching appearance of the young ladies, warned him to seek safety in flight ere he was annihilated or demoralized. He remainded [sic] long enough, however, to learn that the costumes for the occasion were simply superb, the music ravishing and the refreshments all that the most fastidious taste could desire. The N.S.S.P. was represented by a select delegation which added much to the occasion by its presence.
Among the gentlemen marked for faultless execution in the dance we noticed Mr. N., alias Shad for activity and for gracefulness, Mr. B., alias " Rob ;" and for being the handsomest man, (if the ladies are to be credited,) Mr. G.
